DIY Clutch with Optional Crossbody Chain

I needed a clutch for nights out on the town to fit my cell phone, ID, and cash, and I didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on it. Time to DIY!!!

I purchased a cheap blue sunglasses case for $2 on Amazon knowing it would be the perfect size. I also picked up some $5 Plasti-Dip spray paint from Lowe's. I like the faux latex finish of the Plasti-Dip its ability to stick to pretty much any surface.

Use sand paper to prepare the plastic surface. Spray and let dry!

I applied two coats to both the outside and interior of the case.

Adding the crossbody chain

I attached a small silver chain to the interior with 1/4” black elastic. The chain I used was from another clutch but any small-medium width chain should work. Attach jump rings to the bottom of your chain if they aren't there already (they were on mine). You need these to attach to the elastic.

Cut the elastic into two 1.25" strips. Loop the elastic around the jump ring and glue it to the inside with E-6000 or another strong craft glue.
(Tip: apply painter's tape over the elastic to hold in place while the glue dries.)

This project cost less than $8 to make and I have a lot of Plasti-Dip left over for future projects!

When I was finished I added a metal motif to the front but you can decorate this clutch any way you'd like. Rhinestones, paint pens, a Mod Podge and fabric scrap collage, anything!

This is a pretty simple project. I suggest you try it out!

Have fun!
